There are tons of great homeschool books out there that deal with homeschooling methods, curriculum, schedules, inspiration etc. And thank goodness for them, right? But sometimes we need a break to just sit back and not take ourselves so seriously, to laugh at life as homeschoolers.

I’m always amused at the socialization comment. First, it’s usually asked while I’m sitting watching my kids “socialize” with their kids. And second, most teachers have to remind their students they are there to learn, not socialize.
It’s a total oxymoron, right?

My argument to the socialization question is always, “I was homeschooled growing up and I’m the most social person I know!”
I love it!
It’s funny that their biggest argument against homeschooling is one of my biggest arguments for it. I don’t want your definition of socialization. Bullying, peer pressure, anxiety, eating disorders, depression…? Those don’t sound super beneficial to my kids education .
Exactly, Lyndsie. For some, the term socialization has become code for whatever happens to them when they are in the clutches of a failing education system.
This book looks hilarious. Not all socialization is equal. I’m glad my son gets positive socialization.

Socialization to me means interacting with people. All people. Any people.
Yes, all people. Not just 30 same aged peers.

I have to admit, we’re more on the hermit side, but we mingle well with others. When I see my children being respectful, polite, engaging, caring, and enlightening I’d say that they have grasped socialization quite well. Even when we act slightly awkward and odd at times.
Even hermits can interact well when the situation calls for it.

I never give socialization much thought. Our kids are around many different people of many different ages. They get socialized. I don’t really want them socialized with 20-30 kids there own age all day long every day. Just doesn’t make sense.
Exactly. That’s just forced association.
To me, socialization means my children know how to be polite to others and can work with peers to accomplish a task.

My goals for proper socialization of my children are looking people in the eye, being friendly, courteous, and at no time will they bully people online or in person.
I’d give a copy to my awesome sister, who endures no homeschooling support/cold shoulders from her inlaws.

“Socialization” to me means the ability of the child to engage and interact with people of all ages. To be polite, kind, honest, and considerate to whomever they come into contact with.
